Chris and the staff at Munks,
Thank you very much for hosting the “Dust it off, fire it up & hit the road” event on Saturday, May 1st.
My 74 Beetle was experiencing an ever-increasing oil leak from the top / right side of the engine. When I e-mailed Munks asking if there was room available for my car in this event, not only did I get a positive reply but a reply that they had a good idea what the cause was.
Upon arriving at the event, I was greeted by Chris and he welcomed me to Munks. Actually, I have been a previous customer of Munks way back 11 years ago. After purchasing my car from a junkyard, It was actually Munks that got my car running. And it has been running pretty well since then, or so I thought.
One of the many things that impressed me about Munks was the professionalism that they show. Chris has created a “checklist” that he uses for every car. This checklist is used to go over the car in a thorough / methodical way to insure that when the car leaves Munks after servicing, the car owner is fully aware of the condition his / her car is in.
As mentioned above, I thought that once the oil leak was fixed, I’d be all set for the upcoming driving season. However, prior to starting on the oil leak, we started with the aforementioned checklist. Here, I discovered several loose bolts, bad wire connections and a wire that had worn through the insulation and would have stranded me on the road. In addition, I had a stripped bolt on the oil sump causing some of my oil leak.
By the time we had gone through the mechanical portion of the checklist and repaired what needed to be repaired and, yes, Chris’ initial assumption related to the top of the engine oil leak (pin holes from rust on the oil inlet) was correct, my car was now safe to go back out on the road. Due to the fact that this was a “club” event (flyer posted on the Michigan Vintage Volkswagen Club (MVVC)), we did not go through the entire checklist, I need to go back to Munks to complete the balance of the items.
The end result is that if you are looking for a “world-class” repair shop for your European car, look no further than Munks. Chris and his staff are true professionals with a passion for repairing your car to the factory specs.
With great appreciation,
